• Studies show that 80% of visitors hate flash intros.
• They’re annoying.  Visitors want to get to the content of your site as quickly as possible and with as few clicks as possible.  Splash intro pages waste time by forcing your visitors to either sit and watch or click unnecessarily through to another page.  Your website should make it as easy as possible for people to get what they want, not to put roadblocks in their way.
• Splash pages will affect your search engine ranking. By having a splash page instead of primary content on the home page of your website you’re not only putting a roadblock up for your visitors, but for search engines too, this will certainly have a negative effect on your ranking.
• Web expert Jared Spool of “User Interface Engineering” says:
  When we have clients who are thinking about Flash splash pages, we tell them to go to their local supermarket and bring a mime with them. Have the mime stand in front of the supermarket, and, as each customer tries to enter, do a little show that lasts two minutes, welcoming them to the supermarket and trying to explain the bread is on aisle six and milk is on sale today.
• If you were to survey people who use the internet on a regular basis most of them will admit they will click on “skip intro” before watching the splash animation. By looking into website access logs it has been shown that at least 25% don’t even make it past the splash page.
• Flash discriminates against the visually impaired.  “Screen readers” cannot read flash content.  Users with visual impairment will typically enlarge the text on a page to enable them to read it, if there is no text, there’s no reason for them to stay on your site.

Some of the warning signs they offer are:

• You receive a letter that looks like an invoice for the registration or renewal of a domain name.
• The domain name listed in the invoice is very similar to your actual domain name, but may have a different ending. For example, it may end in .net.au instead of .com.au or the .au at the end may be missing.
• The domain name may be correct, but the letter is not from the company that you previously used to register your domain name.

They also offer some helpful advice including:

• Use your common sense: the offer may be a scam.
• Check the website address carefully. Scammers often set up fake websites with very similar addresses.
• Try to avoid having a large number of people authorised to make orders or pay invoices.
• Always check that goods or services were both ordered and delivered before paying an invoice.
• Make sure the business billing you is the one you normally deal with.
• Read all the terms and conditions of any offer very carefully: claims of free or very cheap offers often have hidden costs.
• You can contact your local office of fair trading, ASIC or the ACCC for assistance.

Microsoft is releasing an emergency patch to fix a perilous software flaw which allows hackers to hijack Internet Explorer (IE) browsers and take over computers.

The US software giant said that in response to “the threat to customers” it immediately mobilised security engineering teams worldwide to deliver a software cure “in the unprecedented time of eight days”.

Researchers at software security firm Trend Micro say attacks based on the vulnerability in the world’s most popular web browser are “spreading like wildfire”, with millions of computers already compromised.

Microsoft typically releases patches for its software on the second Tuesday of each month and rushing this fix to computer users out-of-cycle is testimony to the severe danger of the threat, according to Trend Micro.

“When the patch is released people should run, not walk, to get it installed,” Trend Micro advanced threat researcher Paul Ferguson said.

“This vulnerability is being actively exploited by cyber-criminals and getting worse every day.”

Trend Micro has identified about 10,000 websites that have been infected with malicious software that can be surreptitiously slipped into visitors’ unprotected IE browsers to take advantage of the flaw.

Hackers can take control of infected computers, steal data, redirect browsers to dubious websites, and use machines for devious activities such as attacks on other networks, according to security specialists.

“What makes this so insidious is it takes advantage of a big gaping hole of IE, which has the largest install base of any browser on the market,” Mr Ferguson said.

IE is used on nearly three-quarters of the world’s computers, according to industry statistics from November.
